Developing Research Skills

Gerhard Bissels and Ilana Dannheisser
March 11, London
This workshop will take place in the seminar room at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, providing participants with a chance to visit the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Library and Information Service (CAMLIS), situated in the former RLHH boardroom.

During the morning, the emphasis will be on developing research skills. Librarian Gerhard Bissels will lead a practical session, demonstrating how to carry out research using the databases available through CAMLIS. Ilana Dannheisser will then outline the approaches she used when carrying out research in fulfilment of the MSc in homeopathy at the University of Central Lancashire, which explored the homeopath's experience of the homeopathic consultation.

In the afternoon, Ilana will present an overview of the findings and recommendations arising from her research. There will also be an opportunity for discussion in small groups of participants' particular areas of interest. Members of the Society's Research Committee will give an update on the Committee's recent activities and plans for the future.

Ilana has been practising in South London since 1996. She has recently completed a MSc in Homeopathy, from the University of Central Lancashire. Her research for this centred on the subject of taking the case, which has always been of particular interest to her. She works as a supervisor and teaches for Purton House School of Homeopathy and the College of Naturopathic Medicine. Ilana has been involved in running study groups based on the Sensation Method.

The Homeopathy Action Trust (HAT) is collaborating with the Society on this occasion: the annual subscription to HAT now includes membership of CAMLIS.

Hydrocarbon Remedies - New Perspectives in Prescribing for Cancer and Terminal Patients

Dr Elizabeth Thompson
13 March, Bristol
In this workshop Elizabeth will be drawing on her vast experience at the Bristol Homeopathic Hospital of prescribing for cancer and terminally ill patients and in particular on her use of some of the hydrocarbon remedies. Roger Morrison's book on the carbon remedies has provided wonderful and detailed information about this large group of remedies, some well known like Petroleum and others much less well known like Kali-ferro-cyanatum. In recognising certain themes about this group you will be able to open up your understanding of the hydrocarbon remedies, recognising them from old and new perspectives. Many of the clinical cases presented will be of patients with serious conditions such as cancer and ME

Dr Elizabeth Thompson, BAOxon, MBBS, MRCP, FFHom is Academic Director for the Bristol Homeopathic Hospital in the South West of England. She uses a variety of teaching methods to create a learning environment where everyone participates. She is also Lead Clinician and runs the complementary cancer care service from the hospital, with 15 years of experience prescribing in the cancer setting.

The Incident Room: Working with Acute Cases

Francis Treuherz
14 May, London
The intention of this seminar is to encourage participants to become more confident prescribers in acute situations by looking at ways to:

Francis will present cases from his experience, ask many questions, and invite participants to contribute from their own experience. The emphasis will be on providing participants with tools to prescribe for their own patients in person or at a distance.

Francis Treuherz has had many years of enthusiastic practice, teaching and scholarship since being a successful patient in the mid 1970s. He has been in full time practice since 1984 (in the NHS from 1990 to 2003). He has worked on the Homeopathic Helpline since its inception in 1996. His library has over 8,000 volumes on homeopathy. He is a Fellow of the Society of Homeopaths, editor of the journal, and has written many articles, a research report and a book.

Breast Cancer: An Integrated Approach

Rachel Roberts
12 June, Edinburgh
With 41,000 new cases of breast cancer per year in the UK, this is the malignancy we are most likely to encounter in practice. This informal and interactive day is an opportunity to fully explore the many different aspects of working with women facing this disease. We shall look at:

Participants are encouraged to bring cases for group discussion and/or to share their experiences of working in this field.

Rachel qualified from the College of Homeopathy, London, in 1997 and practises from the Nelson Homeopathic Pharmacy Clinic, London. Before discovering homeopathy Rachel obtained an honours degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham, specialising in physiology. This background has led to a particular interest in the integration of homeopathic and medical knowledge. She has lectured in medical sciences, materia medica, philosophy and casework at various colleges in the UK and overseas. Rachel spoke at the Society of Homeopaths' Conference in 2005 and the Student Conference in 2007. She is author of the ‘Mat Mat Cards’ (materia medica flashcards) and co-author with Stephen Gascoigne of the home study CPD course ‘Mental Health’. In June 2007 Rachel took up the post of Research Consultant for the Society of Homeopaths.

Women and Fertility; the Role of the Homeopath

Linda Razzell
14 June, Winchester
Linda has been practising and teaching homeopathy for the last 25 years. Besides that, she is a mother and grandmother in a rather extended family: she has recently remarried and lives in the Pyrenees. For the last 10 years the focus of her practice has been on issues around women and fertility. This has led her to ask questions about what is really happening to women's fertility today.

Linda plans to explore these issues and our own reactions to them so that we may become more aware and effective prescribers.

Women’s Health Issues: Hormonal Imbalances

Ellen Kramer
25 June, Manchester
Ellen is the Director of The College of Practical Homeopathy (CPH) and also runs her own busy practices in Islington and Finchley. Her extensive clinical experience has meant she has been able to develop her own methods of treating women’s health issues. Ellen will share her wealth of knowledge and expertise on the impact of synthetic hormones on reproductive health.

She will present case studies covering a range of disorders such as PMS, fibroids, infertility and menopausal problems. The seminar will cover different methods of prescribing homeopathically, ranging from classical to organ support approaches. We will explore the links between physical symptoms, the impact of allopathic treatment programmes using drugs/surgery to treat these symptoms, and mental / emotional causations and effects.

There will be the opportunity for participants to bring their own cases to work with. Ellen’s approach is eminently practical and attendees will immediately be able to apply her strategies to their own patients.

The seminar will cover

Using the indicated remedies, with the sarcodes, tautopathics, constitutional and miasmatic treatment as indicated by the client's case.

All the days run from 10.00-5.00 and cost £50 for members with discounts for multiple bookings, students and Newly Registered Members.
